The purpose of bilateral stimulation is to activate both sides of the brain, specifically the left and right hemispheres. This is believed to help the brain process traumatic memories and emotions more effectively by integrating them into the individual's overall memory network. During bilateral stimulation, the brain is thought to make new connections between the distressing memory and more adaptive and positive information, reducing the emotional charge associated with the traumatic event.
